About me

My name is Brendan O'Shaughnessy and I am here to listen to you. I have nearly 30 years’ experience of working with couples and would be happy to help you resolve any issue in your relationship.

I am accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and have Post Graduate Degree in Counselling from U.C.C. I am also a member of the William Glasser Institute of Ireland graduating in Reality Therapy in 1995.

I see my role as one of understanding where you are and working with you to find a way out of your current difficulties. I’m not here to judge or tell you what to do but may offer some techniques or tools that could help.



Couples Counselling

I have worked with the Cork Marriage Counselling Centre for 30 Years and was a Board Director of the National Domestic Violence Intervention Agency and other charities.


Individual Counselling

Around 40% of my experience is working with individuals dealing with life's challenges including Abuse, Anger Management, Anxiety, Bereavement, Depression, Health Related Issues, Personal Development, Self Esteem, Sex Related Issues, Stress, Trauma, Work Related Issues.



Completed Diploma in Advanced Supervision across Professions – IACP Accredited & recognised by Supervisors Association of Ireland (SAI). My combination of Counselling and Business is a sound foundation for Supervision support to individuals in various caring professions.


Executive Coaching

Having worked with Multi National companies in Senior Management positions for the last 38 years, plus my counselling experience, I am in a unique place to support executives with personal and career development.

VHI's PMI 38 14 policy covers counselling/psychotherapy sessions when the service is provided by a practitioner registered with the IACP.

Irish Life Health
As of October 2020, Irish Life Health added a Psychotherapy and Counselling Benefit.
This benefit allows a member to claim back some of the cost of attending a psychotherapist* or a counsellor*.
*Psychotherapist or Counsellor: An accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) or the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP).

Laya Healthcare
With over 100 schemes Laya Healthcare do not have a list of which policies offer counselling cover. They always advise each member to check their specific level of cover.
On all schemes that have child counselling, Laya Healthcare will allow returns for sessions carried out by an IACP member for children under 18.
For adult counselling, there are two separate benefits: Psychologists or Counsellors & Therapists. The scheme must have adult counsellors & therapists listed to be eligible to claim back for sessions with an IACP member.

Income Tax
Counselling fees can be claimed back against tax @ 20%
